Chapter 10

The full reconstruction changed the story completely.
Elena had stopped at a roadside turnout after Adrian demanded she pull over.
Bianca, who had been following in another vehicle, arrived seconds later.
Adrian exited Elena’s passenger side.
Elena refused to surrender the phone.
Bianca ordered Adrian to take it.
When Adrian reached back into the car, Elena tried to drive away.
Adrian grabbed her wrist.
Mia screamed.
Elena’s car struck Bianca’s vehicle at low speed.
That was the first impact on the recording.
Adrian stumbled backward.
Elena accelerated away.
For twelve seconds, she was free.
Then the car failed to make the descending curve.
Investigators originally concluded she entered too fast while emotionally distressed.
The recovered audio and telemetry showed something else.
Elena was braking.
Hard.
But braking pressure dropped almost immediately.
The vehicle struck the guardrail and rolled down the embankment.
Bianca stared at Adrian.
“You told me she lost control.”
Adrian did not answer.
Lorenzo’s eyes moved toward him.
The old service record returned to Claire’s mind.
Adrian had asked the mechanic about disabling the recorder.
He had also asked another question that morning.
Whether warning lights appeared immediately after brake-fluid loss.
The mechanic had forgotten until detectives interviewed him again.
Adrian’s breathing changed.
Bianca whispered:
“What did you do?”
He finally looked at her.
“Nothing that was supposed to kill her.”
The sentence emptied the room.
Lorenzo did not move.
Adrian’s voice became rough.
He had loosened a hydraulic fitting earlier that day.
Not enough, he claimed, to cause immediate failure.
Enough to produce a warning and force Elena to stop the car.
His plan was simple.
Elena would pull over.
Adrian would retrieve the phone.
Bianca would confront her.
They would scare her into abandoning the evidence.
But Elena drove farther and faster than Adrian expected after escaping the turnout.
The pressure dropped.
The brakes failed.
The car went over.
Bianca covered her mouth.
Her eyes filled with horror.
“You never told me.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You told me to make sure she couldn’t leave.”
Bianca’s voice broke.
“I meant the family.”
Adrian laughed once.
A dead sound.
“You always mean something different after it goes wrong.”
Lorenzo stood.
His chair moved backward slowly.
Anthony stepped forward.
Lorenzo raised one hand.
Anthony stopped.
The silence was heavier than violence.
Then Claire placed another recovered data sheet on the table.
Elena’s smartwatch had transmitted heart activity after the crash.
For almost fourteen minutes.
Bianca called 911 twelve minutes after impact.
Mia’s memory was right.
May you like
Elena survived the crash.
And Bianca and Adrian spent most of those minutes searching for the phone before calling for help.
