Chapter 4

Bianca recovered quickly.
She always did.
“Elena was dramatic.”
Her voice remained smooth.
“She called everyone something.”
Lorenzo watched her.
Bianca’s fingers had started turning her pearl ring.
A habit she had when lying as a teenager.
She had forgotten he remembered.
Claire continued reviewing Elena’s old phone backup.
One message had never been sent.
Draft only.
To Lorenzo.
I’m not leaving because of you. I’m leaving until you finally see them.
Lorenzo read it.
His breathing stopped.
Bianca looked away first.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
The three words changed everything.
See them.
Not escape you.
Not fear you.
Them.
Lorenzo looked toward Adrian.
“What did Elena want me to see?”
Adrian smiled bitterly.
“You think every unfinished sentence proves your wife still trusted you?”
Lorenzo’s chair moved back slightly.
Anthony’s eyes shifted toward his hands.
Lorenzo noticed.
He forced them open.
Adrian continued.
“Elena spent the last year of her life fighting with Bianca.”
Bianca’s gaze snapped toward him.
“Careful.”
The word came quietly.
Adrian looked at her.
For the first time, the two people who had protected the same story for two years sounded like they were protecting themselves from each other.
Lorenzo saw it.
“Continue.”
Adrian inhaled through his nose.
“Elena thought Bianca had too much influence.”
“Over what?”
“The capos. Charity boards. contracts. Family security.”
Bianca laughed softly.
“I was doing the work your wife considered beneath her.”
Adrian’s eyes stayed on Lorenzo.
“Elena wanted you to remove Bianca from operational decisions.”
Lorenzo looked toward his sister.
Bianca did not deny it.
That was worse.
Then Anthony spoke.
“Elena came to me too.”
Every head turned.
Lorenzo’s eyes settled on his oldest friend.
“When?”
Anthony’s breathing changed.
“Two weeks before she died.”
Lorenzo’s voice dropped.
“And you’re telling me now?”
Anthony looked down.
“She asked me not to tell you until she had proof.”
The room contracted around them.
Another person close to Lorenzo had carried part of Elena’s secret.
Anthony continued.
“She believed Bianca and Adrian had built a second chain of command inside the family.”
Bianca stood.
“That’s enough.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
She stopped.
Anthony’s voice was quieter now.
“Elena said men were taking orders under your name that you never gave.”
Silence.
Then Claire opened one final recovered note from Elena’s backup.
Four words.
IF I’M RIGHT, LORENZO ISN’T IN CONTROL.

For the first time, the mystery was no longer only about Elena’s death.
It was about whether Lorenzo had been Mafia Boss in name while his sister and closest capo quietly built another empire beneath him.
