Chapter 8

The message was traced to a prepaid device.
No subscriber.
No useful location.
But it told Lorenzo something important.
There had been a backup.
Adrian knew it.
Someone else knew it.
Elena had planned ahead.
Mia’s therapist records became the next piece.
After the crash, four-year-old Mia had repeated several phrases during play therapy.
The notes were uncomfortable to read.
“Mommy said give it back.”
“Uncle Adrian was loud.”
“Aunt Bianca came when Mommy was sleeping.”
And:
“The red light was on.”
Lorenzo stared at the last sentence.
The cabin recorder had a tiny red emergency light when manual backup upload was triggered.
The vehicle’s local unit had been disabled.
But Elena may have activated the emergency upload before Adrian could stop her.
Claire contacted the old security vendor.
Their retention period was only eighteen months.
The crash was two years ago.
Nothing should have survived.
Then the vendor’s former engineer remembered a server migration.
Old encrypted files from high-security clients had been moved into cold storage rather than deleted because of an unresolved lawsuit.
Recovery was possible.
Not guaranteed.
While technicians worked, Bianca requested to speak with Lorenzo.
Alone.
He refused.
Anthony stayed.
Bianca looked toward him with open disgust.
“You trust him now?”
Lorenzo’s eyes did not move.
“I trust witnesses.”
That hurt.
Bianca inhaled.
“I didn’t know Adrian was in her car that long.”
“How long did you think?”
“A few minutes.”
“Why?”
“He was supposed to get the recording and leave.”
Lorenzo’s face became still.
There it was.
Bianca knew.
She had known Elena possessed evidence.
She had sent Adrian to retrieve it.
Bianca’s eyes filled but her voice remained controlled.
“I wanted the recording. I did not want Elena dead.”
Lorenzo’s hand pressed flat against the table.
“What did you want?”
“To stop her from tearing the family apart.”
“She was my wife.”
“She was changing you.”
Lorenzo looked at his sister.
Bianca’s composure finally cracked.
“You were going to dismantle everything our father built because Elena made you ashamed of it.”
Her voice lowered.
“I thought if I could remove the proof, she would leave.”
“So you chose my marriage for me.”
Bianca’s eyes glistened.
“I chose the family.”
Anthony looked away.
Lorenzo did not.
Then Claire entered.
She said only four words.
“We recovered the audio.”
May you like
Bianca’s face emptied.
And Adrian, in the next room, demanded an attorney before anyone even pressed play.
