Chapter 2

The memorial ended.

Nobody was permitted to leave the private gallery until names and contact information were recorded.

Bianca hated that.

“You’re treating family like suspects.”

Lorenzo stood near the sealed doors.

His eyes stayed on her.

“I’m treating suspects like suspects.”

Her nostrils flared.

Adrian sat across the room with an ice pack against his jaw.

The confidence he had worn for twenty years as one of Lorenzo’s most reliable capos had begun leaking away.

But not completely.

He leaned forward.

“You want to reopen Elena’s crash because a six-year-old drew a picture?”

Lorenzo’s hand stopped against his cuff.

Adrian noticed.

Then smiled faintly.

“You know what trauma does to children.”

Lorenzo crossed the room.

He did not rush.

That made Adrian’s smile disappear faster.

“You were in the car?”

Adrian looked toward Bianca.

Again.

That glance was becoming its own answer.

His attorney had already arrived and stepped between them verbally, not physically.

“We’ll address historical allegations through proper channels.”

Lorenzo looked at Adrian.

“Good.”

A pause.

“Then start remembering.”

The original crash file came from New York State Police before midnight.

Elena Vescari had died two years earlier when her sedan struck a barrier on a private mountain road north of the city and rolled down an embankment.

Mia survived in the rear child seat.

Bianca’s official statement said she and Adrian had been returning separately from a charity dinner when they discovered the wreck.

Bianca called 911.

Adrian climbed down and removed Mia before fire crews arrived.

For two years Lorenzo had thanked them for saving his daughter.

Now Mia’s drawing suggested they were there before the emergency call.

The call timestamp was 10:18 p.m.

The vehicle’s crash recorder registered impact at 10:06.

Twelve minutes.

Lorenzo stared at the numbers.

Anthony Morello, his longtime consigliere, lowered his voice.

“Twelve minutes can disappear in chaos.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“Then we find the chaos.”

Phone records established that Bianca’s phone was active during those twelve minutes.

She made no emergency call.

But at 10:09 she called Adrian.

Three minutes after the impact.

Adrian had told investigators he was already standing beside her.

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

Then Claire Donnelly, the independent investigator, found another detail.

Adrian’s phone had connected to Elena’s vehicle Bluetooth system at 9:41 p.m.

Thirty-seven minutes before the crash.

He had not merely been near the car afterward.

His own phone confirmed he had been inside it before Elena died.
