Chapter 11

Bernadette slapped Damian.

Not Adriano.

Her own son.

The sound cracked through the restoration gallery.

Damian stared at her.

For several seconds, no one breathed.

Bernadette’s hand shook violently.

“I destroyed that little girl’s trust for you.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“You volunteered.”

“I believed you were protecting yourself.”

“I was.”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“You were building a throne.”

Damian laughed bitterly.

“There is no throne.”

He looked toward Adriano.

“There is only him.”

Adriano did not react.

Damian continued.

“Everything bends around Adriano. Every meeting. Every contract. Every decision.”

Bernadette’s eyes filled.

“You sound like your father.”

The room changed.

Damian froze.

Adriano’s gaze sharpened.

Bernadette had avoided mentioning Carlo Hale all night.

Damian’s father had died fourteen years earlier after being expelled from Carbone business operations.

Family history said he embezzled money.

Bernadette believed Adriano exposed him publicly.

Carlo lost his position.

His marriage collapsed.

He died by suicide two years later.

Damian had grown up hearing one story.

Adriano destroyed your father.

Bernadette looked toward Adriano.

Her voice became quieter.

“I told him that story.”

Adriano’s expression hardened.

“Because you believed it.”

“Yes.”

She turned toward Damian.

“And because I needed someone else to hate.”

Damian’s breathing changed.

Bernadette continued.

“I taught you that Adriano took everything from us.”

Damian’s eyes flashed.

“He did.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“I don't know anymore.”

That uncertainty was new.

Adriano did.

Years ago Carlo had come to him privately before the embezzlement became public.

He confessed.

Asked Adriano to protect Bernadette and Damian from the financial fallout.

Adriano kept that request secret because Carlo begged him to.

Bernadette never knew.

Neither did Damian.

Adriano had allowed them to hate him because exposing Carlo’s confession would have humiliated a dead man.

That silence had consequences.

Damian stared.

“You're lying.”

Adriano said nothing.

Then Charlotte entered carrying an archival legal file.

“I found Carlo’s sealed statement.”

Bernadette’s breath caught.

The library had stored old Carbone legal records in a private family archive.

Carlo’s handwriting was on the first page.

The truth Damian had built his resentment around was about to change.
