Chapter 13

The six-week timeline exposed the final structure.
Damian’s debt was real.
The manuscript theft was real.
But both had become tools inside a longer campaign.
He had been building support among younger associates.
Offering them contracts.
Promising autonomy.
Telling them Adriano was too traditional to share power.
Some listened.
A few accepted.
One of them was Salvatore Reed.
Adriano’s own logistics capo.
Salvatore had worked beside him for eleven years.
When confronted, Salvatore did not deny it.
His face was gray.
“I never agreed to take Theo.”
Adriano stared at him.
“You knew Damian was planning something.”
“I knew he wanted a council challenge.”
“And the Psalter?”
Salvatore’s eyes dropped.
“I suspected.”
“Did you tell me?”
No answer.
Adriano’s fingers slowly stopped moving over his ring.
“Why?”
Salvatore finally looked at him.
“Because if I came to you without proof and I was wrong…”
His voice faded.
Adriano waited.
“You would never trust me again.”
The words landed.
Damian smiled from across the room.
“There.”
Adriano ignored him.
Salvatore continued.
“Everybody around you knows accusations against family need evidence before they reach your desk.”
“Who taught you that?”
Salvatore said nothing.
He did not need to.
Adriano had.
Not explicitly.
Through years of punishing uncertainty.
Through expecting people to arrive with answers instead of concerns.
Through treating doubt as weakness.
Damian had exploited that culture.
Ava heard something dangerous.
Bernadette silenced her.
Salvatore suspected something dangerous.
He silenced himself.
Different motives.
Same result.
Adriano looked at his longtime capo.
“You're suspended.”
Salvatore nodded.
No argument.
Then Adriano turned toward Damian.
“You built your plan inside my blind spot.”
Damian smiled faintly.
“At least you finally see it.”
Adriano’s eyes hardened.
“Don't mistake recognition for gratitude.”
Outside investigators and foundation counsel were brought fully into the rare-book theft and attempted abduction evidence.
No private family cleanup.
No missing files.
No quiet repayment.
Damian’s access ended.
Bernadette’s too.
Then Harrison called from Providence.
The Psalter had been recovered safely.
But the storage container held something else.
A second archival box.
Inside were financial records Damian had never mentioned.
Records showing payments from Elias Grant to someone else inside the Carbone organization.
May you like
Not Damian.
The account belonged to Salvatore.
