Chapter 14

Salvatore’s betrayal was smaller than Damian’s.

That did not make it harmless.

He had accepted consulting payments from one of Grant’s companies.

At first for legitimate logistics advice.

Then for internal scheduling information.

He claimed he never shared security details.

Investigators would decide that.

Adriano did not.

He removed Salvatore permanently from operational access while the review continued.

The family council met the following evening.

This time Adriano did not sit at the head immediately.

That confused everyone.

He remained standing.

Damian sat with counsel.

Bernadette sat separately.

The evidence was laid out without theatrics.

The duplicate wristband.

The service route.

The stolen manuscript.

The cloned security permit.

The emergency-authority amendment.

The fake evidence against Bernadette.

The Providence airfield plan.

The Grant contracts.

The six-week council preparations.

Then Carlo’s statement.

Damian listened without expression.

When it ended, Adriano finally sat.

“Anything?”

Damian looked at him.

“You want an apology?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Adriano’s voice remained calm.

“The truth on record.”

Damian leaned back.

For several seconds, his breathing was the only sound.

Then he said it.

He wanted Adriano removed.

He wanted control of Boston operations.

He believed he had earned it.

He believed Adriano would never voluntarily give him enough authority.

Grant offered money and outside backing.

The library theft became a way to fund the break.

Theo seeing the manuscript created a risk.

Damian transformed the risk into leverage.

Bernadette closed her eyes.

He continued.

“Yes, I planned to use my mother if it failed.”

Her hand tightened around the edge of the table.

Damian looked at her.

“You would've survived.”

Bernadette’s face changed.

Not grief.

Clarity.

She finally understood how little her sacrifice had meant to him.

The council removed Damian from every Carbone-controlled business and referred the evidence through counsel to the relevant authorities.

Bernadette resigned from the library foundation.

Adriano then surprised everyone.

He announced governance changes that limited his own unilateral authority.

Independent financial review.

Two-person vault authorization.

Whistleblower protection.

No emergency transfer of child custody or security based on one family officer’s command.

One older capo frowned.

“You're weakening the chair.”

Adriano looked at him.

“No.”

His gaze moved around the table.

“I’m weakening the hiding places.”

The meeting ended.

But Bernadette remained seated.

Everyone else left.

She looked at Adriano.

Her voice came out rough.

“There’s one thing about Theo you still don't know.”

Adriano stopped.

Bernadette reached into her coat.

Not for a weapon.

For a folded hospital document.

“I found this in Damian’s apartment yesterday.”

Adriano’s eyes narrowed.

The paper carried Theo’s name.

And a pediatric appointment Adriano had never authorized.
