Chapter 12

Adriano did not read Carlo’s statement aloud.

He handed it to Damian.

Damian refused.

His hand remained at his side.

Bernadette took it instead.

Her eyes moved across the first paragraph.

Then stopped.

Her breathing became uneven.

Carlo had admitted taking money.

Not once.

For years.

He had hidden gambling losses and bad private investments.

Adriano discovered the discrepancies only after Carlo asked for help covering them.

Carlo refused treatment.

Refused public accountability.

Eventually the board removed him.

But the statement contained another paragraph.

Bernadette’s hand began shaking.

If my wife or son ever asks, tell them Adriano tried to keep this private. The shame is mine.

Bernadette sat down.

No one touched her.

Her voice came out almost soundless.

“He never told me.”

Adriano looked at her.

“He asked me not to.”

“You let me hate you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adriano’s eyes did not move.

“Because telling you would have meant using a dead man’s confession to make myself look better.”

Bernadette covered her mouth.

Damian finally grabbed the document.

He read it.

Again.

Then tore his eyes away.

“This changes nothing.”

His voice was too loud.

Everyone heard the crack underneath it.

Adriano waited.

Damian’s chest rose faster.

“My father still lost everything.”

“He lost what he stole.”

Bernadette closed her eyes.

Damian stared at Adriano.

Then at his mother.

Years of grievance had just lost its cleanest villain.

That did not erase Damian’s ambition.

It made him responsible for what he chose after the grievance became convenient.

Adriano’s voice stayed low.

“You had debt.”

Silence.

“You had resentment.”

Silence.

“You had reasons.”

Damian’s fingers tightened around Carlo’s statement.

“None of those reasons put my son in a van.”

Damian looked away.

Then Bernadette whispered:

“I made him hate you.”

Adriano’s gaze shifted to her.

She was crying quietly now.

“I told him every year that Carlo died because you humiliated him.”

Her shoulders dropped.

“I built that part.”

Adriano did not absolve her.

“You also pinned Ava to the floor.”

Bernadette nodded.

“I know.”

For once there was no defense.

Then Enzo entered with another recovered file.

A calendar.

Damian had scheduled a council meeting for 10:30 tonight.

Before Theo was ever supposed to disappear.

The meeting invite was created six weeks earlier.

This plan had not begun with the missing manuscript.

Damian had been preparing to challenge Adriano long before Theo saw anything.
