Chapter 13

Thomas’s recordings changed things between Adrian and me.

Not because they gave us instructions.

Because they exposed how much we had both been living around a dead man’s imagined opinion.

Adrian listened to the full archive slowly.

With permission.

Some recordings made him laugh.

Some made him angry.

One hurt us both.

Thomas said:

“Eleanor protects Adrian so fiercely she may accidentally teach him that competence always arrives with rescue.”

I stared at the speaker.

My dead husband remained irritatingly accurate.

Adrian looked at me.

“Dad really liked criticizing you when you weren’t there.”

“I was there.”

He laughed.

Good.

Then Thomas continued:

“If I die early, she’ll make herself twice as strong and probably leave him half as much room.”

Silence.

That one stayed.

I had done exactly that.

Thomas died.

I became both parents.

Both protectors.

Both authorities.

Whenever Adrian struggled, I filled the gap before he could.

It felt loving.

It also kept him younger around me than he was anywhere else.

“I’m sorry.”

He looked at me.

“You already said that.”

“This is a different one.”

Fair.

I apologized for solving problems he should have been allowed to survive.

For letting captains come through me rather than him when he was assigned work.

For speaking about readiness without defining what ready meant.

Adrian listened.

Then:

“I’m sorry for enjoying it.”

That surprised me.

“Being rescued.”

He smiled sadly.

“It’s easier to complain you don’t trust me when I know you’ll clean things up.”

There.

Shared pattern.

No villain required.

That conversation did more for us than a hundred declarations of family loyalty.

Because both of us finally had something to change.
