Chapter 3

Thomas’s original recording still existed.

Rafe found it in our private archive before midnight.

Forty-one minutes.

Not six seconds.

Adrian sat beside me while we listened.

Thomas’s voice came through first.

“Eleanor will never let Adrian lead.”

My son went still.

Then the missing words arrived.

“Not because he’s my son. Not because he’s Bellini. Not because men clap when he walks into a room.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Thomas continued.

“If he earns command, she’ll know before anyone. If he doesn’t, loving him means refusing to hand him people he isn’t ready to carry.”

My son looked down.

I said nothing.

The recording continued.

Thomas and I had been discussing succession after a dispute involving Malcolm Cole.

Malcolm believed sons inherited authority naturally.

Thomas disagreed.

Then my husband said something I had forgotten.

“Cole will teach his children that Eleanor stole what should have belonged to him. Watch them if they ever come back smiling.”

Silence.

Adrian stopped the recording himself.

“How did Grant get this?”

Good question.

Our archive was secure.

But not always.

Years earlier, before Rafe rebuilt household security, Malcolm’s daughter had worked several charitable events inside the estate.

Serena.

Eighteen then.

Invisible to anyone who considered young women decorative.

She could have copied it.

Or Malcolm did before leaving.

Either way, the Cole family kept one sentence for fifteen years and waited until it could hurt us.

Adrian looked sick.

“I believed it.”

“Yes.”

“You’re not going to tell me I was stupid?”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because it was your father’s real voice.”

That mattered.

The strongest lies contain something authentic.

Then I asked:

“Did Serena show you anything else?”

His hesitation returned.

“One more recording.”

Different voice.

Mine.

I heard myself say:

“Adrian is not ready, and marriage will not change that.”

Real.

I remembered the conversation.

Six months earlier.

With Rafe.

I had been discussing Adrian taking command of a new waterfront operation.

Not his entire life.

Serena removed the context.

Two recordings.

Two parents.

Both saying just enough to make my son believe the people who loved him had privately agreed he would never become anything more than Eleanor Bellini’s child.

I understood his anger now.

I did not excuse what he allowed on the lawn.

Both truths could stand.
