Chapter 4

Malcolm Cole was dead.

His grievance was not.

Fifteen years earlier, he ran three Bellini hospitality properties and a private lending network.

He was charismatic.

Useful.

Popular.

Then I discovered what he called family discipline.

Widows pressured into selling businesses cheaply.

Young relatives forced to repay debts their fathers created.

Employees threatened through spouses.

Malcolm called it keeping Bellini strong.

Thomas called it rot.

We removed him.

Not killed.

Not hunted.

Removed.

Malcolm spent the rest of his life telling Grant and Serena that I had stolen his rightful place beside Thomas.

Grant grew up angry.

Serena grew up clever.

Different expressions of the same inheritance.

I met Serena alone the morning after the engagement disaster.

No gown now.

No diamonds except the ring Adrian had not yet taken back.

She sat across from me.

“Did your father teach you I destroyed him?”

She looked directly at me.

“He taught me you made him irrelevant.”

More honest.

“Did he tell you why?”

“He said you hated anyone you couldn’t control.”

Convenient.

I placed an old photograph between us.

Malcolm.

Thomas.

Me.

Younger.

Laughing.

“We loved him once.”

Serena stared.

“That doesn’t make what you did right.”

“No.”

I placed another item down.

A handwritten note from Thomas.

MALCOLM GETS ONE FINAL CHANCE. NO MORE PRESSURE ON THE FAMILIES.

Serena read it twice.

“He never showed us this.”

Of course.

Grievances require editing too.

I looked at her.

“Your father was not erased because he challenged me.”

My voice stayed low.

“He was removed because he used vulnerable people to make himself powerful.”

Serena’s eyes hardened.

“You expect me to believe your version.”

“No.”

I leaned back.

“I expect you to notice that your brother built last night exactly the same way.”

“What does that mean?”

“He gathered people who wanted something from Bellini.”

Jobs.

Contracts.

Influence.

Access.

Then taught them to call their appetite justice.

Her face changed.

Small.

Enough.

I continued.

“You did not humiliate me because I control too much.”

I looked at her engagement ring.

“You humiliated me because you needed Adrian to believe thirty people wanted him to replace me.”

May you like

Serena did not deny it.

That was when I knew the wedding had never been only a wedding.
