Chapter 14

Adrian asked for an operational assignment.
Not a title.
Good start.
I gave him oversight of three hospitality properties outside Chicago.
Not glamorous.
Staffing problems.
Vendor fights.
One restaurant losing money because the chef hated everyone.
Adrian loved it.
Then hated it.
Then got good.
I did not intervene.
Almost.
Twice I picked up the phone.
Twice Rafe looked at me until I put it down.
I resent competent employees.
Six months later, one property was profitable again.
Another still struggled.
Adrian came to me.
“Advice?”
Not rescue.
Advice.
I gave it.
He ignored half.
Also progress.
Captains began respecting him differently.
Not because he was Thomas’s son.
Not because he had almost married Serena.
Because they watched him make decisions people disliked and remain standing afterward.
That had always been the missing skill.
Approval no longer controlled every room.
One day Peter Voss challenged him loudly during a meeting.
Adrian said no.
Peter pushed.
Adrian still said no.
Then called me afterward.
“I think I finally understand why you always look tired.”
I laughed.
“Leadership.”
“People.”
“Same thing.”
He did not ask for the Bellini head position.
Not once.
May you like
That mattered more than if he had.
Power becomes less seductive when you finally touch the work beneath it.
