Chapter 10

I dissolved the informal Recognition Circle.

That was Marcus’s real weapon.

Not official.

Not written.

Just old families who met privately before major decisions and agreed who was “acceptable.”

No legal authority.

Plenty of social power.

I could not stop people from talking.

I could stop treating their collective approval as necessary.

From then on, captains received assignments directly through active leadership.

No retired elder could block promotion informally.

No spouse or child’s behavior could become private succession evidence.

No family medical issue belonged in political discussion unless it actually affected operational capacity.

Some people complained.

Good.

Marcus called it authoritarian.

Funny.

A man who secretly recorded my child complaining about centralized power.

I almost admired the lack of self-awareness.

Conrad lost every operational role.

He kept personal property.

Nothing more.

Marcus retained no advisory access.

Delilah moved into her own apartment funded by money she had before me.

I refused to punish her by taking what was hers.

Consequence does not require theft.

Nathan Vale remained.

He had supported the test initially.

Then rejected using Owen.

He apologized.

I did not absolve him quickly.

But I listened.

He admitted:

“I thought they’d provoke you with insults.”

“What difference does that make?”

“A large one.”

He was right.

Manipulating an adult boss is ugly politics.

Terrorizing a child is another line.

Both wrong.

Not identical.

I assigned Nathan no authority for six months.

Then reassessed.

People expected permanent categories.

Traitor.

Loyal.

Exiled.

Restored.

Real accountability is messier.

That annoyed everyone.

Good.

Then Gloria Hayes came to see me.

She had asked the succession question at dinner.

“I wasn’t asking about Owen.”

I looked up.

“What were you asking?”

“Whether you still believe blood should determine what comes next.”

Interesting.

“No.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

Apparently Marcus’s failed coup had opened a larger conversation.

Maybe useful things sometimes grow from ugly exposure.

I hated that sentence.

Still true.
