Chapter 15

Owen turned six.

His hearing was normal.

His hatred of peas remained severe.

He started school.

Made friends.

Got into trouble for throwing mulch.

Ordinary life.

That mattered.

One evening he asked:

“Was Delilah going to be my mom?”

I paused.

“She was going to marry me.”

“Same?”

“No.”

He thought.

“Why no marry?”

Because she abused you.

Too much detail?

Not anymore.

Age-six version.

“She hurt you and lied to you because she wanted control over our family.”

He frowned.

“Control like remote?”

I laughed.

“Kind of.”

“Did she say sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Still no marry?”

“Yes.”

That confused him.

Good.

Children often think apology resets reality.

I wanted him to learn otherwise gently.

“Sorry means you admit wrong.”

I continued.

“It doesn’t always put things back.”

He looked toward the refrigerator.

“Like torn picture?”

Exactly.

“Yes.”

“Make new.”

Sometimes.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

Then asked:

“Can Delilah come birthday?”

Harder.

“Do you want her?”

He shrugged.

“Maybe one hour.”

I contacted her.

She came.

One hour.

No Marcus.

No Conrad.

No politics.

She brought no gift.

Smart.

Owen showed her a toy train.

She listened.

At the end she left when the hour ended without asking to stay.

That impressed me.

Afterward Owen said:

“She less mean.”

Children.

Brutal.

Accurate.

I told Delilah later.

She laughed.

Then cried.

Maybe both were deserved.

Our relationship never restarted.

That mattered too.

Not every transformed person earns restoration to every role.

She became someone Owen could see occasionally without fear.

That was enough.
