Chapter 5

I did not end the engagement that night.
Everyone expected me to.
That was exactly why I waited.
Not because I doubted.
Because I wanted every choice separated from adrenaline.
Delilah moved to a guest wing under guard.
No access to Owen.
No access to private rooms.
No phone except monitored calls to her family.
She called it imprisonment.
I called it temporary containment inside a house she had used to stage psychological abuse against my son.
Different.
Conrad lost every operational privilege immediately.
He laughed when Rafe informed him.
“You think titles matter?”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“Access does.”
That stopped him.
Marcus had promised future power.
I removed present doors.
Meanwhile Owen woke twice crying.
The first time, he pressed both hands over his ears.
The second time, he begged me not to leave the room.
I stayed.
Not all night.
Important.
When he calmed, I told him:
“I’m going to sit outside the door.”
He grabbed my sleeve.
“No.”
I paused.
Then stayed five more minutes.
After that:
“I’m still going outside.”
He cried.
I went anyway.
Door open.
Visible.
Not abandoning.
Not surrendering every boundary to fear.
Parenthood requires cruel little balances no council understands.
In the morning, he found me asleep in the chair outside.
He poked my face.
“Dad.”
I opened one eye.
“What?”
“You snore.”
“Lies.”
He smiled.
Progress.
Then:
“Delilah come?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
“I don’t know.”
He nodded.
Children tolerate honest uncertainty better than adults who build politics around control.
Later, Dr. Hale confirmed Owen’s hearing was returning normally.
Good.
Then he told me something else.
The repeated balloon bursts had been chosen carefully.
Close enough to frighten.
Not close enough to likely cause permanent damage.
I understood.
Marcus wanted fear without injury.
Evidence without consequences that looked severe enough to turn the room against them.
Controlled cruelty.
That phrase stayed with me.
Then Rafe entered.
“We found the full recording.”
My jaw tightened.
“What full recording?”
He placed a tablet on the desk.
Not only tonight.
Three earlier files.
Owen crying.
Delilah provoking him.
May you like
Conrad laughing.
They had been rehearsing.
