Chapter 6

The first recording was six weeks old.

Owen in the garden.

Delilah hiding his favorite toy and telling him I had thrown it away because he made a mess.

He cried.

She gave it back later.

The second:

Conrad telling Owen I skipped breakfast because I was tired of him.

False.

I had left early for a meeting.

The third:

Delilah popping one balloon behind him during a family lunch.

Testing the reaction.

He covered his ears immediately.

That gave them the method.

Tonight was escalation.

Not improvisation.

I watched all three once.

Then never again.

My son’s fear was not content.

I would not turn it into private evidence theater.

I looked at Delilah.

“How long?”

Her face broke.

“Two months.”

“Why start before the Council plan was final?”

She hesitated.

Because the plan was not the beginning.

Jealousy was.

There.

Owen had never liked her enough.

Not hated.

Never bonded.

He wanted me when hurt.

Ruth when tired.

His nanny when sick.

Delilah remained outside the circle.

She resented it.

Marcus noticed.

Fed it.

“He said children have to be taught who the new center is.”

I stared.

“What center?”

“The family.”

No.

He meant Delilah.

She wanted Owen’s attachment reorganized around the upcoming marriage.

Less dead-mother memory.

Less dependence on me.

More compliance with her.

Then politics arrived and gave the cruelty purpose.

That was worse.

A bad impulse became a strategy.

Conrad entered mid-conversation under guard.

He heard enough.

“You’re making her sound insane.”

I turned.

“She lied to a three-year-old to make him cry.”

“So?”

That word.

So.

Everything important became visible.

Conrad did not see emotional harm as real unless it produced physical marks.

Marcus likely taught him that.

I asked:

“Did your father do this to you?”

He laughed.

“Worse.”

There.

He thought suffering created legitimacy.

Because he survived childhood cruelty, it became proof that cruelty worked.

I looked at him.

“Then you should have known better.”

His smile faded.

“Instead you decided Owen had not suffered enough.”

May you like

Silence.

That was the first time Conrad looked ashamed.
