Chapter 10 - AVA WAS NEVER ASKING FOR A GUARD
Ava had never asked Noah to guard her door.
That was the major twist.
Bianca invented the arrangement.
And she forced Ava to participate.
The child-advocacy interview, staff statements, and Ava’s later conversation with her attorney finally made the pattern clear.
The first night Bianca put Noah outside Ava’s bedroom, Ava opened the door and told him to go back to bed.
Bianca caught them.
She told Ava that if she undermined her again, she would pull her from school, take her away from the Bellandi estate, and make sure she never saw Noah again.
Ava believed her.
So the next time, Ava stayed quiet.
Then she began sneaking things into the hallway.
A pillow.
A blanket.
Milk.
Food.
She sometimes sat with Noah after Bianca went downstairs.
That explained the hidden bedding.
The missing breakfasts.
Ava’s exhaustion at school.
And the pillow and blanket in her arms the night Rocco finally saw what was happening.
She had opened the bedroom door because she was about to give them to Noah.
Then Bianca appeared behind her.
Ava repeated the sentence Bianca had taught her:
“Guard dogs don’t need sleep.”
Not because she believed it.
Because Bianca required Ava to say cruel things aloud so that if the arrangement were ever exposed, it could be described as a jealous child demanding special treatment.
Bianca had been creating her own defense.
Ava would look spoiled.
Noah would look difficult.
Bianca would look like a mother caught between children.
That was why she kept forcing Ava to speak.
That was why she immediately shoved Ava backward when Rocco arrived.
Ava had not been the favored child controlling Noah.
She had been the second child Bianca was controlling.
The revelation changed Rocco’s anger completely.
Bianca’s stated motive—that she was protecting Ava from being treated as less important—had contained enough truth to sound convincing.
But her behavior showed the opposite.
She had used her own daughter as insulation.
The child she claimed to protect became the person expected to absorb blame if the abuse was discovered.
Rocco sat alone after hearing the full account.
For days, he had wondered whether Ava could ever safely live near Noah again.
