Chapter 5 - EVERYONE WHO LOOKED AWAY
The staff investigation hurt Rocco more than Bianca’s explanation.
Not because everyone had been disloyal.
Because many had been loyal in exactly the wrong way.
A guard admitted Bianca once ordered Noah brought from the nursery at eleven thirty at night.
“Why did you do it?”
“She said you approved.”
“Did you confirm with me?”
“No.”
Another employee had heard Noah crying outside Ava’s room.
She considered calling Rocco.
Then Bianca warned her that interrupting a Bellandi family meeting could cost her job.
She stayed silent.
Lorraine admitted something worse.
“I told myself you would handle it if it were serious.”
Rocco looked at her.
“How could I handle what nobody told me?”
She had no answer.
He changed estate protocol that day.
No order involving either child could be issued through another adult in his name.
Anything affecting sleep, meals, medication, discipline, school, or movement required direct confirmation from Rocco or the designated childcare professional.
Rank no longer substituted for verification.
Some older family members mocked the changes.
One uncle called them “corporate nonsense.”
Rocco removed him from the estate’s childcare access list.
The mocking stopped.
That night, a maid found something in the linen closet near Ava’s room.
A small stack of folded blankets.
A child-sized pillow.
Two unopened juice boxes.
All hidden behind spare towels.
The pillowcase had Ava’s initials stitched into the corner.
Rocco looked at it for a long time.
Why would Ava hide her own bedding outside her bedroom?
He remembered asking about the pillow.
Nothing.
Ava had lied.
But not in the way Bianca accused Noah of lying.
