Chapter 8 - THE DOOR ROCCO OPENED HIMSELF
The report was filed the next morning.
That was the decision Rocco could not reverse.
A child-protection investigator entered the Bellandi estate shortly after noon.
Rocco instructed security to cooperate.
No calls to family connections.
No interference.
No one was to intimidate, delay, redirect, or “handle” anything.
Bianca’s attorney called within an hour.
“She’ll say you assaulted her.”
“She can.”
“She’ll say the Bellandi estate is unsafe.”
“Then investigators can determine that.”
“She will use your reputation.”
“I gave myself that reputation.”
Daniel looked at Rocco after the call ended.
“You know this may become expensive in ways money doesn’t fix.”
“Yes.”
The investigator interviewed staff separately.
She examined work schedules.
Security access.
Childcare arrangements.
School communications.
Noah’s pediatric records.
Nothing depended on a secret camera or miraculous evidence.
It depended on people finally telling the same story without Bianca standing in the room.
Noah had repeatedly been removed from bed.
Ava had repeatedly been awake during those nights.
Bianca had repeatedly invoked Rocco’s authority.
And staff had repeatedly failed to verify it.
Rocco gave his own statement.
He included the moment he physically removed Bianca from Noah and sent her backward onto the hallway bench.
He did not describe himself as heroic.
He described exactly what happened.
Bianca filed a complaint alleging excessive force.
Rocco’s attorney did not suppress it.
The investigator asked whether he regretted intervening.
Rocco answered carefully.
“I regret allowing the situation to exist long enough that intervention became necessary.”
That answer later mattered more than any threat could have.
For the first time in his adult life, Rocco had invited an outside system to judge what happened inside his home.
