Chapter 5

Rosalie asked for a private conversation two days later.

She brought an email printout.

Bianca had sent it three weeks before the wedding.

The subject was:

Post-Wedding Household Transition.

It instructed Rosalie to make an inventory of Livia’s clothes, favorite toys, bedtime supplies, and medications.

The proposed destination was the lake house.

Alessandro read it slowly.

“Did you answer?”

“I asked whether you approved it.”

“What did she say?”

“That everything had already been discussed.”

It hadn’t.

The email never explicitly said Livia would live there.

It used phrases like expanded schedule, primary quiet environment, and weekday consistency.

Claire reviewed it.

“She was creating language she could later claim meant something harmless.”

Alessandro looked at the page.

“She wanted my daughter out of the house.”

“Probably.”

“Why not simply ask me?”

Claire gave him a look.

“You would have said no.”

He would have.

Immediately.

That evening Alessandro searched his own memory instead of Bianca’s paperwork.

Three months earlier, she had asked whether the lake house could be renovated before the wedding.

He thought she wanted a retreat.

Two months earlier, she asked whether Rosalie would ever consider living there.

He assumed she was planning more staff coverage.

A month earlier, she suggested converting Livia’s current nursery into a larger guest suite “once she’s older.”

Every conversation had been framed as future planning.

Alessandro had answered without hearing what was underneath.

That frightened him.

Not because Bianca was clever.

Because he had been inattentive.

He had spent his life noticing threats directed at him.

He had missed the ones delivered in polite sentences around his daughter.
