Chapter 10

The major twist was that Leo’s abuse was not a side effect of Celeste’s cruelty.

It was the evidence Celeste and Brandon were manufacturing against Emma.

The forensic timeline, payroll records, draft termination papers, school communications, and recovered messages finally showed the whole design.

Emma discovered ghost workers on the Northstar invoices.

She confronted Celeste.

Celeste warned Brandon that Emma intended to tell Vincent.

Brandon knew what that could expose.

For eighteen months, he had used the estate staffing account to hide inflated labor charges and private consulting payments.

Celeste had benefited too.

If Emma reached Vincent first, she would have one enormous advantage.

She was trusted by Leo.

Trusted by longtime house staff.

And she could identify which night workers had never actually appeared.

Brandon could not simply fire her.

Emma had a written employment agreement.

Firing her immediately after she questioned payroll would look retaliatory.

She could hire counsel.

Request records.

Force attention onto Northstar.

So Celeste proposed a different solution.

Make Emma dangerous.

Not financially dishonest.

Not insubordinate.

Dangerous to Leo.

That accusation would destroy everything at once.

Vincent’s trust.

Emma’s contract protections.

Her access to the estate.

Her credibility if she later claimed Brandon’s payroll was fraudulent.

The plan needed something stronger than Celeste’s word.

It needed Leo.

So they changed Emma’s schedule.

They placed her on late-night childcare duty during Vincent’s absences.

That was the first clue.

Then Brandon repeatedly sent Emma away from Leo for short, unnecessary tasks.

During those windows, Celeste punished the child.

A slap.

A hard grab.

A frightening threat.

Never severe enough to create an obvious emergency.

Enough that Leo learned what happened when Celeste raised her hand.

Enough that bruises appeared while Emma was officially responsible for him.

That was the second clue.

Celeste then began documenting what she had created.

Concern reports.

Calls to preschool.

Descriptions of an overwhelmed young caregiver.

She did not accuse Emma completely.

Not yet.

She planted the shape of the accusation first.

Meanwhile Brandon created false Northstar shifts in the household records so fake employees could appear as witnesses or backup caregivers if anyone questioned Emma’s movements.

The third clue was the draft termination file.

It existed before the birthday gala.

They already knew how the story would end because they had written the ending before Vincent saw the evidence.

The birthday gala was supposed to finish it.

Celeste would raise her hand.

Leo would flinch.

Vincent would see the conditioned response.

Celeste would say:

Look what your maid taught him.

Brandon would remove Emma from the room.

Celeste would claim Emma had become physically abusive.

The existing preschool emails and concern reports would make the accusation look like the culmination of a known problem.

Emma would be fired for cause that night.

Then Brandon would close the Northstar account, move procurement elsewhere, and describe any later complaint from Emma as revenge from a terminated employee accused of hurting a child.

It was calculated.

And it failed because they misunderstood one thing.

Leo was frightened of Celeste.

But he was not confused about who frightened him.

When Vincent pulled him safely behind his body, Leo finally said the four words Celeste never expected him to say.

She hits me nightly.

That was why Celeste’s confidence disappeared.

That was why Brandon reached for Emma immediately.

Not because Emma had caused the problem.

Because she was the adult most likely to confirm Leo’s truth.

Vincent sat with the reconstruction in silence.

Then he looked at Emma.

She had been twenty-four years old.

A housekeeper.

Surrounded by people who assumed family rank would outweigh anything she said.

She had stayed anyway.

Not because she believed Vincent would save her.

Because she believed somebody needed to remain near Leo.

Vincent looked down at the draft termination memo.

Brandon had nearly used Vincent’s own trust in family hierarchy as the final weapon.

The scheme worked only because Celeste and Brandon knew something about him.

May you like

They knew if forced to choose quickly between his cousin and a young employee, Vincent would probably hear family first.

That realization hurt more than the stolen money.
