Chapter 8

Vincent made the decision that afternoon.

It cost him more than removing two relatives from his house.

He suspended Brandon from every legitimate Castellano company and removed his procurement authority.

Celeste lost all access to household operations, family events, and Leo.

Then Vincent authorized three outside actions.

A formal child-abuse report.

A forensic audit of estate vendors and payroll.

And full preservation of security logs, staff records, financial systems, and relevant communications for investigators.

Rebecca warned him what that meant.

“Your estate records contain names you would prefer strangers not study.”

“I know.”

“Your vendors overlap with family businesses.”

“I know.”

“Security logs may show people entering this property who become questions unrelated to Leo.”

“I know.”

“Once authorities receive records, you do not choose which questions they ask.”

Vincent looked toward the playroom.

Leo was sitting on the carpet with Emma and the child psychologist.

He had arranged toy cars in a perfect line.

“He’s three.”

Rebecca waited.

Vincent continued.

“If I protect the family books by hiding what happened to him, then Celeste and Brandon were right about the family.”

Rebecca understood.

He signed.

The consequences started immediately.

Two vendors hired lawyers.

One senior capo accused Vincent of exposing the estate over a “domestic dispute.”

Vincent removed him from the house.

Another relative suggested paying Emma generously and letting her disappear before authorities complicated things.

Vincent stared at him until the man stopped talking.

Emma heard about the suggestion later.

She found Vincent in the study.

“You didn’t have to do all this because of me.”

He looked at her.

“This isn’t because of you.”

“They were trying to frame me.”

“They were hurting my son.”

“And stealing.”

“Yes.”

“But the outside investigation—”

Vincent interrupted.

“I kept deciding what things meant before listening to the person standing in front of me.”

Emma went quiet.

He continued.

“I’m done doing that.”

The audit began.

Leo temporarily moved with Vincent to a smaller family residence in Lincoln Park while the estate investigation continued.

Emma came too, but only after Vincent asked.

Not ordered.

Asked.

She agreed because Leo wanted her there.

Within forty-eight hours, authorities interviewed staff.

The preschool turned over records.

Northstar produced payroll files.

Brandon’s attorney began negotiating access rather than fighting every subpoena.

Celeste denied abusing Leo.

Then the forensic audit found something that changed the scale of the case.

The ghost payroll did not merely steal money.

Some of the fake employee shifts had been inserted specifically into Leo’s caregiving records.

The names created the illusion that Emma had received backup on nights she was actually alone—

except during the exact windows when Brandon ordered her elsewhere.

Someone had engineered not just money records.

A childcare narrative.
