Chapter 9

Daniel built a timeline covering every suspicious evening.
It was devastating.
7:00 p.m. — Emma listed as primary caregiver.
7:15 p.m. — fake Northstar employee listed as arriving.
7:40 p.m. — Brandon sends Emma downstairs for a task.
7:45 p.m. — security logs Celeste entering family wing.
8:05 p.m. — Leo later described as crying or injured.
8:10 p.m. — Celeste leaves.
8:12 p.m. — fake employee shift ends in payroll.
8:15 p.m. — Emma returns.
The paper record suggested Emma had assistance.
In reality the “assistant” did not exist.
Why create that?
Rebecca explained.
“If Emma later said she was downstairs, the records make it look like another employee was upstairs.”
Vincent understood.
“A witness.”
“A fake one.”
“And if she says Celeste was there?”
“The official household record says Celeste wasn’t working.”
The scheme had been built to make Emma sound confused.
Maybe dishonest.
Maybe desperate to avoid blame.
Then Daniel found the most important document yet.
A draft termination memorandum.
Employee:
Emma Brooks.
Reason:
Suspected physical mistreatment of minor child, dishonesty during internal inquiry, boundary violations, and unauthorized interference with family discipline.
The document was created seventeen days before the birthday gala.
Emma had not been accused yet.
The memorandum already existed.
Vincent read it slowly.
“Who wrote it?”
Metadata identified Celeste.
Brandon edited it.
Another version contained comments.
Brandon:
Need one clear reaction from Leo in front of Vincent.
Celeste:
He already reacts when I lift my hand.
Nobody spoke.
There it was.
Conditioning.
They knew Leo’s flinch had become automatic.
They planned to use it.
But at the gala, the reaction backfired.
Celeste raised her hand expecting Vincent to see a frightened child and blame Emma.
Instead Leo named Celeste.
Then Brandon tried to remove Emma before she could support him.
Rebecca closed the file.
“The birthday incident was supposed to be the final evidence against Emma.”
Vincent looked at her.
“And Leo ruined it.”
“No.”
Rebecca’s voice sharpened.
“Leo told the truth.”
Vincent nodded.
She was right.
The final piece before Part 10 came from a deleted email restored from Brandon’s account.
Sent the morning of the gala.
To Celeste.
Once Vincent sees the flinch, you tell him the maid has been escalating. I take Emma downstairs. We terminate her tonight. Northstar file closes next week.
Vincent read it once.
Then again.
The plot was finally visible.
But one fact still made him sick.
May you like
Celeste had not simply taken advantage of fear Leo already had.
She had deliberately created enough of that fear to make the frame-up work.
