Chapter 14

The legal outcomes arrived nine months after Leo’s birthday.
Celeste entered a plea resolving charges connected to the child mistreatment, false reports, and her participation in the financial and employment scheme.
The agreement included custody restrictions around Leo, mandatory treatment, financial restitution, and a period of incarceration followed by supervision.
Brandon faced more significant financial counts because of his management of the ghost-worker scheme, along with charges connected to retaliation and his role in facilitating the abuse.
Northstar’s owners cooperated after investigators showed them how the Castellano account had been manipulated.
The company paid restitution and lost the estate contract.
Brandon’s restaurant group was sold.
Not dramatically seized.
Sold under creditor pressure.
Several locations survived under new ownership.
Brandon did not.
His family title disappeared.
His procurement authority disappeared.
His influence inside the Castellano organization disappeared.
The birthday-gala photographs that had collapsed over him were repaired and returned to storage.
Vincent never restored the display.
He no longer wanted giant formal pictures greeting guests at the entrance to his son’s home.
The ballroom itself changed too.
Fewer family events.
No business meetings.
No capos wandering between rooms Leo used.
That decision came from something the child psychologist said:
“You cannot tell a frightened child the house is safe while preserving every condition that reminds him adults can appear anywhere.”
Vincent listened.
That had become another new habit.
The final accountability meeting happened before sentencing.
Celeste and Brandon were permitted to address Vincent through counsel.
Leo was nowhere near the building.
Celeste said:
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
Vincent answered:
“Good.”
She nodded.
“I want him to know someday that I was wrong.”
“That will be his decision.”
Brandon spoke next.
“I kept thinking if I fixed Northstar before you knew, nobody would actually lose anything.”
Vincent looked at him.
“My son lost six weeks of feeling safe in his own bedroom.”
Brandon looked down.
Vincent continued.
“Emma almost lost her name.”
Silence.
“You did lose something.”
Brandon raised his eyes.
“What?”
“The privilege of deciding which damage counts.”
That was the final opportunity.
Neither received family protection.
Neither received theatrical revenge.

The evidence went where evidence was supposed to go.
And consequences followed it.
