Chapter 3

The bright, natural lighting of the atrium seemed to freeze the scene in high-definition clarity. Maya stayed on the carpet, her glossy white Mary Jane flats scuffed slightly from the fall. Silent tears began to spill down her glowing bronze cheeks as the horrific cruelty of her stepmother's words sank in. The white American guests around the table fell into a tense, suffocating silence, terrified to intervene but deeply disturbed by the public humiliation of the Boss's bloodline.

"Mom, I don't think I should sit here," Liam whispered nervously, shifting uncomfortably in the large chair as he looked down at Maya.

"You will sit exactly where I put you, Liam," Charlotte commanded without breaking eye contact with the crying three-year-old. "You belong at the head of this table."

At that exact moment, the heavy, ornate handles of the adjoining council room turned. The thick mahogany doors clicked open, breaking the heavy silence of the atrium.

Xavier stepped out into the bright light.

At thirty-three years old, the Black American Mafia Boss was a vision of deeply masculine, terrifying power. He was as handsome as a movie star, his deep, rich warm-brown skin contrasting impeccably with his custom tailored burgundy silk suit. A black dress shirt, unbuttoned at the chest, revealed the moderate, neatly placed artistic tattoos on his neck. The refined, sharp designs possessed enough negative space so they didn't look dense, creating an attractive but profoundly dangerous aura. The gold signet ring on his tattooed finger gleamed, matching his polished black leather loafers.

His cold, sharp, intimidating eyes instantly swept the room. They bypassed the capos, bypassed his wife, and locked directly onto the tiny figure of his daughter sitting abandoned on the floor.

The sharply defined angles of Xavier's face hardened into a mask of pure granite. His jawline clenched so tightly it looked as though the bone might shatter. He did not shout. He did not run. He moved with a slow, predatory grace, his loafers making deliberate, heavy sounds against the floor.

"Boss," a bodyguard whispered nervously, stepping aside.

Xavier ignored him. He closed the distance, dropping effortlessly to one knee beside his daughter, entirely disregarding his expensive silk suit. He immediately lifted Maya into his strong, protective arms, pulling her flush against his chest.

"What happened, princesa?" Xavier murmured. His voice was deep, slightly raspy, and naturally authoritative. He spoke slowly, with controlled pauses between his words, keeping his volume low, which somehow made the question sound infinitely more terrifying.

Maya buried her face into his black dress shirt, her tiny hands clutching the lapels of his burgundy jacket. She sniffled, pointing a tiny, trembling finger backward. She wasn't pointing at Charlotte. She was pointing upward, toward the sweeping mezzanine railing that overlooked the atrium.

There, visible in the upstairs hallway, sat a neat row of Maya’s small suitcases.

"Daddy…" Maya cried, her voice cracking with absolute, heartbreaking innocence. "She packed my room too."
