Chapter 9

The swift, terrified exodus of the elite guests transformed the bustling atrium into a cavernous, quiet sanctuary. Waiters and hotel staff moved silently along the periphery, hastily cleaning up the shattered glass and righting the overturned velvet crowd posts, desperate to avoid drawing the Boss's attention. The bright video colors of the room felt calmer now, cleansed of the toxic presence that had infected the celebration.
Xavier stood near the head of the long birthday table. The seat of honor, and the chair beside it, remained empty. He gently shifted Maya in his arms, turning his attention entirely to the little girl who held his heart.
"Maya," Xavier murmured warmly, the terrifying, cold-blooded Mafia Boss completely vanishing. His voice was thick with a deep, protective paternal love. He brushed a soft curl away from her tear-stained, glowing bronze cheek. "Look at me, mi amor."
Maya slowly lifted her head from his chest. Her bright, beautiful eyes were red, but the absolute terror had subsided in the safety of his embrace.
"Is she coming back, Daddy?" Maya whispered, her tiny hands playing nervously with the lapel of his burgundy silk suit.
"No, baby," Xavier promised, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to her forehead. "She is never coming back. Nobody is ever going to take your chair again. Do you understand me?"
Maya nodded slowly, a small, brave smile touching her lips. "I understand."
"Good," Xavier said, returning her smile. He walked over to the table and gently set her down. He didn't place her in the chair beside his; he lifted her up and set her squarely in his own massive, high-backed leather chair at the absolute head of the table.
Maya looked incredibly small in the giant seat, her blush-pink tulle dress pooling around her, but she sat up straight, mimicking her father's regal posture.
Xavier knelt beside the chair, bringing himself down to her eye level. "This is your house, Maya. You are the only royalty that matters here. If anyone ever tells you to sit on the floor again, you tell them exactly who your father is."
"Okay, Daddy," Maya agreed, kicking her glossy white Mary Jane flats happily against the chair legs.
"Now," Xavier said, standing up and snapping his fingers. A nervous waiter immediately rushed forward with a silver tray. "I believe we have a birthday cake to eat. Just you and me."

As the waiter sliced a massive piece of chocolate cake for the three-year-old, Xavier’s lead capo, a hardened veteran named Silas, quietly stepped into the room. He stood at a respectful distance, waiting for Xavier to acknowledge him.
"Eat up, sweetie. I will be right back," Xavier told Maya, gently tapping her nose before turning and walking over to Silas. The warmth in his eyes faded, replaced instantly by the cold, calculating intellect of the syndicate leader. The domestic crisis had been resolved, but the true war was only just beginning.
