Chapter 4

The revelation dropped into the bright, cinematic air of the atrium like a live explosive. The guests collectively held their breath, their fair, rosy faces turning a uniform shade of ghostly pale. Packing the belongings of the Boss's daughter was not a domestic dispute; it was an act of profound, suicidal treason against the bloodline of the syndicate.

Xavier remained perfectly still on one knee for a long, agonizing second. He gently rubbed Maya’s back, soothing her tears, his tattooed hand providing absolute security. Slowly, deliberately, he stood up to his full, imposing height.

He cradled his daughter securely in his left arm. He did not look at the suitcases again. He slowly turned his head, his cold, intimidating eyes tracking across the room until they locked onto Charlotte.

"Xavier, darling, let me explain," Charlotte stammered. Her arrogant facade cracked instantly under the crushing, apocalyptic weight of his stare. Her American accent trembled. "It is just a temporary arrangement! The guest wing is much more suitable for a child her age! The master corridor should be reserved for the heads of the household!"

Xavier did not say a single word. His silence was a dark, bottomless void that promised absolute destruction.

Seeing his sister begin to panic under the Mafia Boss's lethal glare, Julian decided to intervene. Blinded by his own ego and a foolish belief in his family's indispensability to the syndicate, the forty-year-old associate stepped directly between Xavier and Charlotte.

"You are overreacting, Xavier," Julian said, his voice loud and combative. He wore his expensive light-grey tailored suit like armor, though it offered absolutely no protection against the predator standing before him.

Julian reached out aggressively. He grabbed the lapel of Xavier’s custom burgundy silk jacket, intending to assert his own dominance in front of the assembled capos.

"Take your hand off my suit," Xavier whispered. Every syllable sounded measured, cold, and dripping with an absolute, deadly danger.

"She is my sister, and she is your wife," Julian retorted arrogantly, completely ignoring the warning. He pointed a finger toward the upstairs hallway. "Charlotte makes the domestic decisions here. If she says the girl needs to be moved to make room for my nephew, then the girl moves. She can sleep in the storage room for all I care. Now tell your men to stand down and let's eat."

The sheer, staggering audacity of Julian's words caused the bodyguards in the room to reach instinctively for their concealed weapons. No one breathed. No one moved. The bright video colors of the room felt surreal against the dark, violent reality that was about to erupt.

Xavier looked down at Julian’s hand gripping his silk jacket. He didn't blink. He just slowly shifted Maya slightly higher on his hip, ensuring she was completely secure and out of the line of fire.

"You believe," Xavier said softly, the raspy depth of his voice vibrating through the floorboards, "that you have the authority... to dictate where my blood... sleeps."
