Chapter 14

Nathan eventually agreed to attend one Sterling dinner.

No announcement.

No introduction as lost heir.

Just:

“My brother Nathan.”

Some older relatives nearly choked.

Good.

One asked whether he would join the organization.

“No.”

Another asked whether his daughters would visit.

“Maybe.”

Then someone asked the question I knew would come.

“Which brother is older?”

Nathan smiled.

“I am.”

The room changed slightly.

Old instincts.

Succession arithmetic.

I saw it.

So did he.

He laughed.

“No.”

One word.

Powerful.

“No what?” an uncle asked.

“No whatever you’re thinking.”

I almost smiled.

Then I said:

“There is no inheritance by age.”

That started an argument.

Of course.

Sterling tradition preferred blood order.

I ended it.

Future leadership would not be decided by birth.

Not Nathan.

Not me handing it to Oscar.

Not any hidden child.

Adults would decide later based on competence and trust.

Nathan raised his glass.

May you like

“To not ruining children early.”

Best toast Sterling ever had.
