Chapter 2

My father’s red box was family legend.

Not treasure.

Not jewels.

Not cash.

Records.

Private agreements.

Who owed whom.

Which branch had been forgiven after betrayal.

Which captains had been rescued quietly.

Which families had broken old promises.

He called it the box that kept Sterling honest.

After he died, we never found it.

I assumed he destroyed it.

Apparently not.

I looked at Claudia.

“Where is the room?”

She said nothing.

“Claudia.”

Still nothing.

I turned to Duncan.

He smirked.

Wrong move.

I picked up Oscar’s crutches from across the hall and placed them beside my son.

Then I looked at the staircase.

“Show me.”

Oscar shook his head.

Fear.

I understood.

Rafe carried him instead.

We went upstairs together.

At the landing hung my father’s portrait.

Oil painting.

Dark suit.

Cold eyes.

Same expression I remembered from childhood whenever someone lied badly.

I removed the frame.

Behind it was a recessed panel.

Small brass latch.

Duncan cursed.

I looked back.

“Still no room?”

No answer.

Rafe opened the panel.

A narrow passage.

Old estate architecture.

My grandfather loved hidden storage.

I hated how often dead men turned architecture into family secrets.

The passage ended in a chamber barely larger than a closet.

Inside:

Four black document boxes.

One empty pedestal.

One red velvet imprint in the dust.

The box had been here.

Recently.

Gone now.

I looked at Duncan.

“Where is it?”

He laughed once.

“You think everything belongs to you.”

Interesting.

Not denial.

Ownership dispute.

Claudia whispered:

“Duncan.”

He ignored her.

Then Oscar pointed toward the floor.

“There.”

A torn strip of red leather.

I picked it up.

Same texture.

Same gold stitching.

My father’s box.

My son had seen it.

Duncan knew.

Then I noticed something else.

One of the black boxes had CLAUDIA written on the side.

Another:

MATTEO.

Another:

SUCCESSION.

The final:

WEST HOUSE.

I looked at my sister.

“What is West House?”

Her face went pale.

May you like

Then she said:

“The place Dad never wanted you to know existed.”
