Chapter 15

Oscar returned to the staircase eventually without fear.
At first he avoided it.
Used the elevator.
No one forced him.
Then one afternoon he stood at the bottom.
Looked up.
I waited.
“Dad.”
“Yes?”
“Come.”
I did.
We climbed together.
Slow.
One step at a time.
No speech.
At the landing, he touched the wall where my father’s portrait used to hang.
“Room?”
“Open now.”
He walked in.
Looked around.
Nothing dramatic.
Empty shelves.
One chair.
Dust.
Then:
“Boring.”
Exactly.
The hidden room that had broken his leg became boring.
That was healing.
Not forgetting.
Scale returning.
He walked back down.
No one behind him.
May you like
No push.
No promise to keep quiet.
