Chapter 4

Nathan was older than me.

By three years.

My father’s first son.

Not by my mother.

By a woman named Rebecca Hale.

I had never heard either name.

Claudia knew only fragments.

Our father had Nathan before he married our mother.

Rebecca died young.

Nathan lived at West House under care of relatives.

Why hide him?

Because my grandfather refused to recognize a child born outside approved marriage.

My father fought him.

Lost.

Then later inherited control and still did not bring Nathan home.

That was the part I could not understand.

“He could have.”

Claudia nodded.

“He didn’t.”

“Why?”

She looked at the black box.

“Because by then you had been born.”

There.

The ugly possibility.

Two sons.

One publicly recognized.

One hidden.

Bringing Nathan home would reopen succession.

My father chose stability.

Maybe.

Or cowardice.

Probably both.

I opened the box marked MATTEO.

Inside was a letter.

For me.

Never delivered.

Matteo,

If you ever find this, it means the family has started digging where I hoped they would not.

Great.

Dead fathers love delayed disasters.

The letter explained Nathan.

Confirmed everything.

Then one sentence:

I did not hide him because he was unworthy.

I hid him because I was afraid two sons would become what my father made us believe brothers must become.

My chest tightened.

Again.

Adults manufacturing rivalry before children choose anything.

My father continued.

Nathan never wanted my chair.

He wanted my name.

That was worse.

A child denied identity because adults feared future power.

I looked at Claudia.

“Where is he now?”

She wiped her eyes.

“I don’t know.”

Duncan did.

Of course.

He smiled faintly.

“He’s alive.”

I turned.

“Where?”

No answer.

Then Oscar whispered from Rafe’s arms:

“Uncle Duncan said Red Box goes to Nathan.”

There.

Duncan had already found him.

The hidden son.

The lost branch.

May you like

And the red box was not missing randomly.

Duncan had taken it to the man my father erased.
