Chapter 10

The ambulance tore down the long, winding driveway of the estate, its sirens wailing into the dark night. Inside the tight, brightly lit cabin, the atmosphere was a tense, focused frenzy of medical intervention. Daniel sat perfectly still, his dark suit blending into the shadows of the corner. He held Elena’s hand tightly in his own, his eyes never leaving her pale, beautiful face.
"Administering flumazenil," the paramedic called out, pushing a clear liquid into the IV line attached to Elena’s arm. "Come on, Elena. Come back to us."
Daniel watched the heart monitor intently. The line remained steady, the weak, fluttering pulse persisting against the odds. She was a fighter. She had always been the strongest person he knew. It was why she had fearlessly audited the family's corrupt ledgers in the first place, completely unafraid of the monsters lurking in the shadows of the estate.
"Her heart rate is increasing," the second paramedic noted, checking the monitors. "The reversal agent is taking effect. The baby's heart rate is stabilizing as well."
A profound, shuddering breath escaped Daniel’s lips. The crushing, devastating grief that had paralyzed him only an hour ago had been entirely replaced by a fierce, protective adrenaline. He reached into the inner pocket of his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a small, encrypted USB drive.
It was the digital backup of the thick audit folder. The physical copy may have been burned by Marcus, but Daniel had ensured the data was immortalized. It contained every transaction, every offshore account, and every dirty secret his mother had ever buried.
He gripped the small drive tightly in his hand. The war with his family was not over. His mother possessed immense wealth and dangerous connections. She would fight the charges from her jail cell, attempting to use her influence to crush him, just as she had threatened.
But Daniel was no longer the grieving son standing helplessly over a mahogany coffin. He was a man who had stared into the abyss of absolute loss and emerged with total, dominant control.
Elena let out a soft, ragged gasp on the stretcher. Her chest heaved, and her dark eyelashes fluttered slightly against her pale, rosy skin.
"Elena?" Daniel whispered, leaning in close, his voice thick with overwhelming relief. "I'm right here. I've got you."
Her eyes slowly opened, unfocused and clouded by the fading sedatives. She looked at him, her fingers twitching weakly against his palm.
"Daniel..." she breathed, her voice a barely audible rasp.

"We are going to the hospital. You and the baby are safe," Daniel promised, kissing her hand repeatedly. "It’s over."
As the ambulance sped toward the city, Daniel looked out the small back window at the fading lights of his grand estate. He knew the days ahead would be filled with brutal legal battles and vicious, public warfare. But as he felt Elena’s fingers gently squeeze his hand, his jaw locked into a rigid stone line. He had authorized the final audit, and he would not rest until his mother and brother paid for every single drop of pain they had caused. The true reckoning had only just begun.
