Chapter 9

The paramedics moved with frantic, calculated precision under the bright, warm chandelier lighting. They lifted Elena’s limp, pale body from the white satin lining of the mahogany coffin, transferring her swiftly onto a medical gurney. The white lace of her gown fluttered as they attached heart monitors and oxygen masks.
"Pulse is weak and thready, but it's there," the lead paramedic announced, his American accent sharp and professional. "Pupils are sluggish. We need to administer a reversal agent for the paralytic immediately. Let's get her moving! We have two patients to save here!"
Daniel stayed firmly by the gurney, his hand securely wrapped around Elena’s cold fingers. He watched the monitor, the steady, rhythmic beeping sound the most beautiful noise he had ever heard in his life.
"Hold on, Elena," Daniel whispered, pressing his lips to her forehead. "Just hold on a little longer. You are safe now. They are never going to hurt you again."
Across the grand living room, the scene was one of total, public humiliation. Police officers aggressively grabbed Marcus, hauling the twenty-eight-year-old man to his feet. Marcus wept openly, offering no resistance as the heavy metal handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. His tailored dark suit was rumpled, his predatory smirk entirely erased by the reality of a long prison sentence.
"Daniel, you cannot do this to me!" the Mother shrieked, struggling violently as two officers grabbed her arms. "I am your mother! I gave you life! You are destroying this family!"
"You destroyed this family the moment you put your hands on my wife's neck," Daniel replied coldly, not even turning his head to look at her as he walked alongside the rolling gurney.
"You will regret this!" the Mother screamed, her blonde hair a disheveled mess, her black velvet dress twisting as she was forcefully marched toward the sweeping wooden staircase and out the front doors. "You hear me, Daniel? You will regret this!"
"Get them out of my house," Daniel ordered the police captain, his voice a steady, authoritative command. "I want the estate locked down as a crime scene. No one enters without my authorization."
"Understood, Mr. Caruso," the captain nodded, gesturing for his men to clear the remaining, stunned guests from the room.
Daniel turned his full attention back to the paramedics as they wheeled Elena out through the grand double doors and down the front steps toward the waiting ambulance. The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the night, casting chaotic, sweeping colors across the exterior of the luxury estate.

"You can ride in the back with us, sir," the paramedic told him, pulling the stretcher up into the back of the rig. "But we need to move fast. The baby is in distress from the sedatives."
"I'm right behind you," Daniel said, climbing into the ambulance without a second thought. He took his seat beside the stretcher, his expensive gold wristwatch glinting in the harsh, clinical light of the vehicle.
