Chapter 12

Sabina became head housekeeper a year later.

Not because I offered.

Because the staff elected her recommendation when the new steward asked whom they trusted to coordinate floor teams.

I approved it.

She was furious.

“Why did nobody tell me they were voting?”

“Apparently democracy is secretive.”

She did not laugh.

Then did.

Good.

Her management style annoyed me because she had inherited my mother’s habit of correcting household issues before I noticed.

One evening she stopped me in the corridor.

“Your dinner guest has been waiting forty minutes.”

“I never approved one.”

Exactly.

A staff message had failed.

Old system would have produced another insult.

New system caught it.

Small.

Useful.

The guest was Nathan Bell.

He looked amused.

“Better door.”

I remembered.

“Yes.”

He nodded toward Sabina.

“Apparently.”

She rolled her eyes after he left.

Power becoming mundane.

Perfect.
