Chapter 7

Sabina refused promotion.

At first.

I offered head housekeeper.

She stared at me like I had proposed marriage.

“No, sir.”

“Why?”

“Because I told you the truth?”

“That helped.”

“No.”

Good.

She understood something important.

Suffering does not qualify a person for management.

I asked what she wanted.

“Normal hours.”

Fair.

“Meals with staff before midnight.”

Fair.

“And?”

She hesitated.

“If somebody senior tells us something that sounds wrong, somewhere to check without getting punished.”

There.

Not title.

Process.

Better.

We created one.

No family member could dismiss or reassign permanent household staff alone.

No visitor request could be suppressed without a record accessible to two independent senior employees.

Staff could report mistreatment outside their direct chain.

Boring.

Useful.

Evelyn mocked me.

“You discovered governance.”

“Leave.”

She laughed.

Then became serious.

“You should have done this years ago.”

“Yes.”

No defense.

Sabina returned to work.

Same uniform.

Same duties.

But something had changed.

Not her status.

Her posture.

May you like

She no longer lowered her eyes when Delphine’s name came up.

That was enough.
