Chapter 8

The engagement formally ended after ten days.
I waited because anger should not make every decision for me.
The answer did not change.
Delphine came to collect personal belongings.
She wore no ring.
I had placed it inside its box.
Not dramatically on a table.
Just ready.
She saw Sabina in the entrance hall.
Stopped.
For a moment I thought she might ignore her.
Instead:
“I owe you an apology.”
Sabina looked at me.
I said nothing.
Her choice.
Delphine continued.
“For the cake.”
Sabina waited.
“For withholding meals.”
More.
“For changing your shifts because you wouldn’t leave.”
More.
“For treating your job like permission to humiliate you.”
There.
Sabina nodded.
Not forgiveness.
Recognition.
Then Delphine said:
“I was afraid.”
Sabina’s face hardened.
“That’s not mine.”
Excellent.
Delphine stopped.
“You’re right.”
She left.
No hug.
No clean ending.
Good.
Outside, I returned the engagement ring.
She looked at it.
“Keep it.”
“No.”
“It was a gift.”
“It belonged to a promise that no longer exists.”
She took it.
Then asked:
“Did you ever intend to give me real authority?”
Hard question.
I answered honestly.
“Yes.”
Her eyes filled.
“When?”
“I didn’t know.”
That was my failure.
I expected trust to develop without discussing its destination.
Delphine interpreted uncertainty as exclusion.
Still not justification.
But context.
She nodded.
Then:
“If I had asked directly?”
“I would have answered directly.”
“Maybe.”
Fair.
Maybe I would have delayed.
Maybe I would have used control as caution.
That uncertainty belonged to me.
She left.
The house felt quieter.
May you like
Not emptier.
Different.
