Chapter 6

The seven people Delphine blocked told seven different stories.

That saved me from imagining a perfect conspiracy.

Anthony Vale thought I rejected his proposal.

Peter Loring thought I was angry over an old argument.

Michael Crane assumed I had become arrogant.

One retired captain, Nathan Bell, had quietly shifted loyalty toward another branch because he believed I no longer valued him.

Small misunderstandings.

Large consequences.

Delphine had not issued fake orders in my name.

Too risky.

She used implication.

“Mr. Hartwell is not receiving you.”

“He has other priorities.”

“I wouldn’t ask again.”

Perfect language.

Technically not a direct lie if she defined herself as household authority.

Morally obvious.

Politically effective.

I met each man.

Corrected the record.

Did not demand loyalty afterward.

That mattered.

Nathan said:

“You expect me to return because you explain now?”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“I expect you to decide based on truth rather than someone else’s version of my silence.”

He respected that more than apology.

Good.

Then Peter asked the harder question.

“How did you not know?”

I had no good answer.

So I gave the true one.

“Because I believed anyone important enough would reach me twice.”

He stared.

“And the people who work for you?”

I understood.

I had designed access around status.

Captains could push.

Servants could not.

Guests might call again.

Staff endured.

That allowed Delphine to build control among people least able to escalate.

Sabina had finally spoken only because I happened to stand beside her while cake covered her collar.

Had I arrived five minutes later?

Maybe she would have cleaned herself.

Finished the shift.

Gone home.

And I would have married Delphine in six weeks.

That thought stayed with me.

Then Nathan said:

“You need a better door.”

I almost laughed.

May you like

He meant system.

He was right.
