Chapter 11

Cordelia found Elise.

Her daughter.

After thirty-seven years.

Not because I told her to.

The ledger provided a last known branch name.

Cordelia stopped there and asked whether she should contact her.

For once, she did not assume access.

“Send one letter.”

I suggested.

“No demand.”

She did.

Elise responded three months later.

One sentence:

I know who you are. I’m not ready.

Cordelia cried.

Then waited.

Good.

Six months later, another message.

A phone call.

Then eventually a meeting.

I knew little else because Cordelia stopped telling me every detail.

Also good.

Relationships do not become family property just because they are dramatic.

What mattered to me was what Cordelia learned.

One afternoon she came to see Priscilla.

By invitation.

She brought no gifts.

My daughter remembered none of Cordelia’s role in the luggage plan.

Lucky.

Unfair.

But children do not owe proportional memory.

Cordelia sat on the floor while Priscilla arranged toy animals.

Priscilla pointed at two.

“Mommy. Me.”

Then a third.

“Baby.”

Cordelia looked at me.

I almost laughed.

Apparently imaginary succession had arrived.

“What’s baby’s name?” I asked.

“Chair.”

I had no idea why.

Children.

Cordelia started laughing so hard she cried.

Maybe because for months grown adults had been rearranging a family around a hypothetical child.

Priscilla solved it by naming a plastic elephant Chair.

Good enough.
