Chapter 7

The ledger contained another surprise.

Adrian Cole.

Priscilla’s father.

Not as a child.

As a visitor.

One entry three years earlier.

Two months before he died.

My breathing stopped.

“What was Adrian doing here?”

Cordelia looked genuinely confused.

Good.

Something she did not know.

Helen remembered.

He came alone.

Asked about me.

Specifically my childhood.

He had noticed I hated closed hallway doors and never understood why.

I had told him nothing about Rose House because I remembered almost nothing consciously.

Apparently Adrian started asking questions.

He found Helen through an old staff contact.

Came here.

Read part of the ledger.

Then made Helen promise not to tell me until he decided how.

“Why didn’t he?”

Helen looked down.

“He died.”

Car accident.

Ordinary.

No conspiracy.

I had learned not every death needs one.

Helen handed me an envelope.

Adrian’s handwriting.

OPHELIA.

My knees weakened.

Inside:

If you ever read this, I ran out of time or courage.

I found out what happened to you when you were little.

I think some of your family still calls it tradition because admitting it was cruelty would force them to rethink too much of themselves.

My eyes filled.

Then:

If we ever have children, nobody sends them anywhere to teach us how to be a couple.

I stopped breathing.

Priscilla had been six months old when Adrian died.

He had already made the rule.

Nobody sends them away to make marriage easier.

He understood before I even remembered.

I looked at Cordelia.

She covered her face.

Adrian’s final line:

You never have to prove you can choose a husband over your child. Anyone who asks you to prove it has already failed both of you.

That ended something inside me.

The wedding was not merely canceled.

The entire premise beneath it had been exposed.

May you like

Desmond had wanted a marriage that required my daughter to shrink.

Adrian had loved me enough to understand that no healthy marriage would ask.
