Chapter 14

I changed how Huxley handled spouses.

No ceremonial household authority.

No automatic inner access through marriage.

A spouse could be loved deeply without inheriting organizational control.

Some relatives thought that insulted marriage.

I thought it protected it.

If someone needed a title to feel secure inside love, we had the wrong marriage.

Cordelia agreed eventually.

Then surprised me.

“You know what I did after Elise was taken?”

I waited.

“I became perfect.”

Perfect daughter.

Perfect Huxley woman.

Perfect aunt.

Perfect adviser.

She believed if she never broke another rule, nobody could remove anyone from her again.

Instead, she became the person enforcing rules.

Trauma turning victim into custodian.

I understood.

Did not excuse.

She knew.

“I thought Rose House made me strong.”

“No.”

I said.

“It made you afraid.”

She nodded.

Then:

“And I built authority so I’d never feel that helpless again.”

There.

The deepest truth.

Delia had used tradition.

Nadine had used access.

Cordelia used control.

Different families.

Same human temptation.

I told her:

“Being afraid explains why you held the key.”

Then:

“It doesn’t justify locking the door.”

She cried.

We sat quietly.

No grand forgiveness.

But she remained my aunt.

May you like

Smaller role.

Healthier relationship.
