Chapter 8

I met Desmond at the estate two days later.
Neutral room.
No ring.
No guests.
He looked exhausted.
Good.
Not punishment.
Reality.
I placed Adrian’s letter between us.
Desmond read it.
His face changed at the last line.
Then he whispered:
“I never wanted her permanently gone.”
“I believe you.”
That surprised him.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“You wanted her temporarily gone so you could become more important.”
His relief disappeared.
Accuracy hurts more than accusation.
He admitted everything.
Cordelia approached him six months earlier.
Explained the First Month.
Explained Rose House.
Explained old council concerns about Priscilla’s bloodline.
At first, Desmond refused.
That mattered.
Then Cordelia told him something carefully designed to reach his insecurity.
Ophelia will never make room for you unless you make her.
He believed it.
Because part of him already felt second.
Priscilla entered my bedroom without knocking.
Sat between us at breakfast.
Called me during meetings.
Changed travel plans when sick.
Normal three-year-old power.
Desmond interpreted it as hierarchy.
Then Cordelia gave him ideological language for jealousy.
Household authority.
Marriage transition.
Family structure.
Suddenly resentment sounded principled.
He whispered:
“I hated feeling like a guest in your life.”
There.
Finally.
“Then you should have told me.”
“I thought you’d choose her.”
I stared.
“I would.”
His face fell.
Then I continued:
“And a man ready to marry a mother should know that before proposing.”
Silence.
That was the truth he had spent months trying to avoid.
He did not need to outrank Priscilla.
Different relationships.
Different obligations.
Love is not a seating chart.
Then I asked:
“Why pack everything?”
Thirty days did not require three suitcases.
His eyes filled.
Because Cordelia advised removing familiar objects from home so Priscilla would “attach to the new routine.”
Bunny pajamas.
Toys.
Books.
Everything.
Desmond packed them himself.

He had looked at every object my daughter loved and placed it inside luggage designed to teach her home could disappear.
That ended whatever part of me still wondered whether the engagement could be repaired.
