Chapter 1

“You hid my granddaughter to impress this woman. You’re finished.”
I said it quietly.
That frightened Julian more than if I had shouted.
Elsie stood pressed against my leg, one hand clutching the torn half of her paper flower. Vanessa was still tangled against the collapsed acoustic panels, Ethan was dragging himself out from between the fallen prop columns, and half the backstage reception had gone silent.
Julian stared at me.
“Dad—”
“No.”
His face tightened.
“Not here.”
I looked around at the guests.
“That was your concern before you checked whether your daughter was hurt.”
His eyes moved toward Elsie at last.
Too late.
She noticed.
Children always notice where the eyes go first.
Julian stepped closer. “This got out of control.”
Elsie’s fingers tightened around mine.
I looked at him.
“No. This was controlled.”
He frowned.
“You controlled what Vanessa believed. You controlled where Elsie stood. You controlled what people were allowed to call her.”
Vanessa pushed herself upright.
“She told me she was staff.”
Elsie flinched.
I turned.
“She is three.”
Vanessa lifted her chin. “Then someone taught her to lie.”
Julian’s face collapsed.
There.
Not accusation.
Recognition.
I looked back at him.
“What exactly did you tell her?”
He said nothing.
Elsie whispered beside me.
“Daddy said I sleep downstairs.”
My chest tightened.
She did not.
She had a room in Julian’s house.
One I had paid to furnish.
I looked at my son.
“How long?”
His breathing changed.
“Dad…”
“How long have you been telling people she isn’t yours?”
Silence.
Then Ethan laughed bitterly from the floor.
“Long enough.”
Julian turned sharply.
Wrong reaction.
I saw it.
So did Vanessa.

And suddenly the lie was no longer something Julian had invented for one woman.
Other people had been helping him keep it alive.
