Chapter 12

Julian blamed grief.

Partly.

That was the first explanation he gave me that contained truth.

After Marissa died, he said every room felt wrong.

Every time Elsie called him Dad, he remembered Marissa.

Every birthday.

Every bedtime.

Every paper flower.

“I wanted one part of my life that didn’t hurt.”

I listened.

Then asked:

“So you erased her?”

His face broke.

“No.”

“You erased the part that hurt.”

Silence.

That distinction mattered.

He had not hated Elsie.

He hated what fatherhood reminded him of.

Then ambition arrived offering a new identity.

Julian Cole-in-law.

Manhattan operator.

Future power broker.

No dead wife.

No little girl asking questions about Mommy.

Clean.

I understood the temptation.

I did not excuse the choice.

“You could have grieved.”

“I did.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You escaped.”

He looked at me.

“And made her pay for the route.”

His eyes filled.

That was the first time I saw my son instead of an ambitious fool.

Good.

He needed to become both in the same room.

“I never stopped loving her.”

“I believe you.”

He looked surprised.

I continued.

“That is what makes this worse.”

Silence.

Cruelty is easier to understand when love is absent.

Julian had loved Elsie.

He still trained her to hide him.

That meant love alone had never been enough to make a good father.

Choice mattered.

Courage mattered.

Truth mattered.

He had failed all three.

“What happens now?” he asked.

May you like

I looked at the paper flower still sitting on my desk.

“You start by becoming her father in public before you ask whether she still trusts you in private.”
