Chapter 15

Thomas Cole withdrew the partnership offer.

That surprised nobody.

He framed it as concern about instability inside Lombardi.

I laughed when I heard.

Victor Hale asked whether we should retaliate financially.

“No.”

He looked disappointed.

“Why?”

“Because I’m not proving Julian right.”

He frowned.

I explained.

“If I attack Cole because they rejected us, I turn their approval into something we need.”

Victor understood.

The Manhattan network was valuable.

Not necessary.

That distinction mattered.

Julian lost the independent hospitality role he had been quietly building.

He also lost two of the capos who had begun orienting around him.

Not through punishment.

Through reality.

Once the Cole access disappeared, so did the fantasy that he was becoming inevitable.

He came to my office one afternoon.

“So I’m finished.”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“You said it at the gala.”

“I said the version of you that hid your daughter was finished.”

He stared.

“And me?”

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“Whether you can be useful without being important.”

He almost laughed.

That was the challenge.

Julian had spent a year wanting rank to prove value.

Now I gave him work without prestige.

Ordinary crew oversight.

No special Manhattan access.

No independent negotiations.

No social power center.

He hated it.

Good.

If he learned to do necessary work without applause, maybe he would become the man he pretended he already was.

Before leaving, he looked at the repaired paper flower on my desk.

“Can I take that?”

“No.”

His face fell.

“Why?”

“Elsie gave it to you publicly. You left it here afterward.”

He closed his eyes.

Another failure.

I handed it over.

“This time, keep it.”
