Chapter 13

Julian’s first public correction happened at the same theater.

His request.

Not mine.

A week after the gala, the charity board held a private follow-up dinner for major donors and family representatives. Many of the same people who saw Elsie called staff were there.

Julian arrived alone.

No Vanessa.

No Ethan.

Elsie came later with me because she asked to.

That mattered.

When Julian saw her, he looked afraid.

Good.

Fear sometimes means the stakes are finally real.

He walked toward her slowly.

“Hi.”

Elsie looked at me.

I nodded.

She turned back.

“Hi, Dad.”

The word landed publicly.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody objected.

Julian’s face tightened.

Then he looked at the room.

“This is my daughter, Elsie Lombardi.”

Simple.

No speech.

No explanation.

He continued.

“I lied about who she was.”

That made several people shift.

Good.

“I did it because I wanted something I thought I would lose if people knew the truth.”

Elsie looked up at him.

He crouched.

“I was wrong.”

She held the paper flower.

Repaired.

Still crooked.

“Do you want it?”

Julian almost cried.

“Yes.”

She handed it to him.

No hug.

I was glad.

Reconciliation should not be staged for adults.

Julian stood holding the flower.

One of the guests approached later and said something polite about fatherhood.

Julian did not pretend nothing happened.

He said:

“I’m trying to repair it.”

Better.

Not fixed.

May you like

Repairing.

That was honest enough for one night.
