Chapter 11

Shaw lost every Vance channel before breakfast.
No council access.
No private captains.
No influence through Julian.
No quiet calls to older men.
He took it badly.
“You’re dismantling decades over domestic drama.”
I stared.
“Say domestic drama again.”
He did not.
Good.
Julian watched.
I wanted him to understand something.
Power does not become respectable because it happens behind kitchen doors.
Evelyn’s bruises were not smaller because no capo witnessed them.
I turned to Julian.
“You lose Vance association.”
His face tightened.
“I’ve worked beside this family twelve years.”
“And hurt my daughter three.”
“That doesn’t erase everything.”
“No.”
I nodded.
“It changes everything.”
He stared.
Evelyn did not defend him.
That mattered.
I asked her quietly.
“Do you want him out of the house?”
She looked at Julian.
Long.
Painful.
“Yes.”
One word.
Her choice.
I turned to my men.
Julian laughed bitterly.
“You’re throwing me out of my own home.”
Evelyn finally looked at him.
“No.”
He stopped.
“You kept telling me this was your house.”
Her voice shook.
“You were wrong.”
Silence.
“This was where Ethan and I lived while you decided what we were allowed to do.”
Julian’s eyes filled.
Evelyn continued.
“I don’t know what happens to our marriage.”
He stepped forward.
My guard moved.
Evelyn raised a hand.
Not toward the guard.
Toward me.
“Dad.”
I stopped.
She wanted to finish.
“I’m not deciding today.”
Julian stared.
“You can’t just—”
“Yes.”
Her voice strengthened.
“I can.”
That was the first real boundary I had heard from her all night.
Not mine.
Hers.
I stepped back.

For years, men kept making decisions around Evelyn because they claimed protection.
I was not going to repeat it while telling myself I was different.
