Chapter 13

Julian asked to see Ethan.

Evelyn decided no.

Not yet.

I respected it.

He asked to see her.

She said yes.

One hour.

My men nearby.

But not in the room.

I hated that arrangement.

I allowed it because she chose it.

Afterward, she told me what happened.

Julian cried.

Apologized.

Blamed Shaw once.

Then corrected himself.

That detail mattered.

“He said Shaw made him feel small.”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Then he said that didn’t make him shove me.”

I nodded.

Good.

Not enough.

But good.

“He asked if we could start over.”

“What did you say?”

“I don’t know.”

I did not push.

Three years does not resolve in one conversation.

Then she added:

“He asked whether you’ll kill him.”

I almost laughed.

“What did you say?”

“That if you wanted him dead, he wouldn’t have made it through breakfast.”

Fair.

“What does he think happens now?”

“He thinks consequences should end when he apologizes.”

I nodded.

Common.

Remorse often wants relief faster than the victim wants trust.

Evelyn looked toward the garden.

“He said Ethan needs his father.”

I waited.

“What do you think?”

She sighed.

“I think Ethan needs a father who doesn’t make him afraid.”

There it was.

Not punishment.

Standard.

Julian could meet it or fail it.

His choice.

I looked at her.

“You’re stronger than you think.”

She smiled sadly.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Don’t make surviving him into proof I needed it.”

The sentence stopped me.

She was right.

People love turning pain into character development because it makes suffering easier to accept.

No.

Julian had not made her strong.

She had remained herself despite him.

I nodded.

“You’re right.”

She looked relieved.

Another correction.

Another piece of the family language changing.
