Chapter 6

The car keys were not just control.

They were evidence.

One of my guards found a hidden drawer beneath Julian’s desk.

Inside were three sets of Evelyn’s keys.

Old keys.

Replacement keys.

The originals from cars she thought she lost.

She stared at them.

“You said I misplaced those.”

Julian shrugged.

“You did.”

My guard looked at him.

“No. They were labeled by date.”

I picked up one tag.

JUNE — AFTER FATHER CALL.

Another.

AUGUST — TRIED LEAVING.

My hands tightened.

Julian had turned punishment into recordkeeping.

He wanted to remember which restriction matched which act of resistance.

I looked at him.

“You catalogued her.”

His face hardened.

“You catalogue everyone.”

Another attempt to make us equal.

I almost admired the desperation.

“My captains.”

I held up the keys.

“Not my wife.”

Evelyn picked up the August set.

Her face changed.

“I remember this.”

“What happened?”

She looked at Ethan.

Then away.

“I packed a bag.”

My breathing slowed.

“Why?”

“Julian threw a chair.”

Silence.

“He didn’t hit me that night.”

The defense came automatically.

I hated it.

“He blocked the front door. Said if I walked out, I could never come back for Ethan.”

My eyes moved toward Julian.

Ethan was her son.

There was no version of that threat that made sense.

Except to someone already terrified.

Julian smiled.

“She knew I didn’t mean it.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.”

The word came quietly.

He stopped smiling.

“I believed you.”

That mattered.

Victims do not experience threats according to what the abuser later claims to have meant.

They experience them according to what was said in the room.

Julian looked away.

For the first time, Evelyn saw him without immediately explaining him.

It was a small change.

I noticed.

Then my guard found something else in the drawer.

A small black notebook.

Julian lunged.

He did not get far.

I opened it.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

And beside mine:

ARTHUR — KEEP EVELYN DISTANT UNTIL SUCCESSION ISSUE RESOLVED.

I stared at the line.

This was not only about marriage.

Someone had been using Julian’s control of my daughter for a larger purpose.
