Chapter 16

Six months passed.

Julian never returned to the house.

He saw Ethan regularly under Evelyn’s terms.

He saw Evelyn less.

Sometimes she wanted distance.

Sometimes answers.

I stopped asking which direction the marriage was moving.

That was hers.

Shaw disappeared from Vance circles completely.

His name stopped opening doors.

No spectacle.

No grand punishment.

Just irrelevance.

The thing men like him fear most.

One evening, Evelyn invited me to dinner.

Same kitchen.

Same stone island.

The prep station had been replaced.

The breakfast-tray rack repaired.

I stopped in the doorway.

Memory hit hard.

Evelyn noticed.

“You okay?”

I almost laughed.

“You asking me?”

“Yes.”

I looked around.

“Yeah.”

Ethan ran past in socks.

No bare feet on cold tile anymore because Julian once made him wait in the kitchen after bedtime.

I had learned that detail later.

One more small cruelty.

One more thing Evelyn had normalized.

She handed me a plate.

“Sit.”

I did.

No bodyguards inside.

No council business.

No questions about Julian.

We ate.

Halfway through dinner, Ethan knocked his cup over.

Juice spilled across the table.

He froze.

His eyes moved instinctively toward the hallway.

My heart tightened.

Evelyn saw it too.

She picked up a towel.

“It’s okay.”

Ethan whispered, “Accident.”

“I know.”

No shouting.

No punishment.

No threat.

He helped wipe it up.

Then kept eating.

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked at me.

Neither said anything.

That moment mattered more than every council victory I had ever had.

Because fear had left the room slowly enough that we almost missed it.
