Chapter 1

Ethan Caldwell came home carrying four Christmas presents.

He dropped all four before he reached the breakfast-room door.

Harper, Willa, Maisie, and June sat around a dark wooden table.

Bare feet.

Thin nightgowns.

Cracked lips.

One plastic plate between them.

Mold covered the bread.

Across the hallway, a Christmas party glittered beneath chandeliers.

Roast beef.

Turkey.

Desserts.

Champagne.

Enough food for fifty adults.

Ethan looked back at his daughters.

Harper reached for the least spoiled piece.

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

“You should’ve followed your dead mother.”

She pushed the bread back toward all four girls.

Harper’s eyes filled.

Nobody had noticed Ethan yet.

Then one of his wrapped gifts slipped from his hand.

The box hit the hardwood.

Vanessa turned.

Her face changed.

Ethan had been overseas for four months.

He was not supposed to return until after New Year.

“Ethan.”

He did not answer.

He walked toward the table.

Willa stared at him as if uncertain he was real.

Maisie whispered:

“Daddy?”

June started crying.

Ethan reached for them.

Vanessa stepped between him and the children.

Red wine filled her glass.

She threw all of it across his face.

Then slapped him.

“You bought gifts instead of raising them.”

Her voice cut through the room.

“Don’t pretend to be their father now.”

Ethan stood completely still.

Grant charged from the ballroom.

His fist came first.

Ethan moved beneath it and countered once.

Grant crashed backward through the Christmas-village display.

Miniature houses exploded from their stands.

Cotton snow filled the air.

Guests screamed.

Vanessa ran toward the old tablet on the sideboard.

Ethan intercepted her.

She tried to shove past him.

He struck her once and redirected her into the folding music stands.

Metal frames collapsed beneath her.

Then Ethan removed the red flash drive from his coat.

He had received it in London three days earlier.

No return address.

Only one sentence written on the envelope:

CHRISTMAS EVE. PLAY IT FOR THE GIRLS.

He inserted it into the tablet.

Claire appeared.

Alive only in pixels.

Gentle.

Smiling.

“My girls, never believe I left because I was tired of you.”

All four children froze.

Harper began sobbing.

Claire continued.

“You were my greatest joy.”

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

Ethan turned.

“You starved my daughters and made their dead mother take the blame.”

His voice became quieter.

“Now tell me who helped you.”

Grant looked toward the ballroom.

Instinctively.

Only once.

Ethan followed his eyes.

Thirty guests stood beyond the doorway.

Capos.

Old family associates.

Bodyguards.

Friends.

One man was not looking at Grant.

He was looking directly at Ethan.

Victor Caldwell.

Ethan’s sixty-three-year-old uncle.

The man Ethan had left in charge of the estate while he was overseas.

Victor slowly lowered his champagne glass.

And Ethan understood that Christmas had just become much larger than Vanessa.
